The Story Behind Our Soil

It all began back in 1975, when collecting cactus had become a new hobby for Bill Poot. He had done research on soils over the years he had begun his collecting. He desired to create a soil blend that was well draining and nutrient rich for the exotic plants he was growing - a soil that very closely resembles their natural habitat. For the first many years he had resorted to using perlite for his potted plants. It did well, but it didn’t provide quite enough aeration as a single use substrate. He also knew regular potting soil wouldn’t do the job, as most mixes are predominantly organic material, leaving little to no room for ample drainage. In the early 2000’s he started experimenting with different ingredients, hand mixing different blends to see what would perform best for the needs of his succulents and cacti. He eventually locked in his proprietary blend, and in 2007 Bill had contacted a local supplier to increase production volume of his soil mix; consisting of lava rock, pumice, and other organic ingredients. From then on, Bill sold bag after bag, customers continued to come back for more, and that’s how our soil was born!
